Australia's Under-19 team has started with a 19-run win in the opening game of the five-match one-day series against Sri Lanka in Darwin.

The match was reduced to 25-overs per team following heavy over night rain that forced play to start at 2:30pm local time.

After the visitors won the toss, they sent the locals in on a good batting wicket, as the home side went on to amass 8-182, before Sri Lanka could only manage 6-164 in reply.

West Australian Tom Beaton was the shining light for the home side, top scoring with a lusty 59 from just 50 deliveries opening the innings, including three sixes in a 57-run opening stand with Ben Dougall (16).

Nic Maddinson provided plenty of fireworks coming in at number three following the demise of Dougall, the New South Welshman plundered a quick-fire 46 from just 32 deliveries including four maximums.

The middle-order faulted as the Australians looked for quick runs losing 5-46, as Chathura Peiris and Charith Jayampathy both snared two wickets each.

In reply, Sean Abbott snared two wickets with his pace as the visitors struggled to stay with the required run rate as the homeside applied good pressure with the ball and in the field.

Kithruwan Vithanage was the top run-scorer for the visitors with 47 from only 38 deliveries, including four boundaries and two sixes.

England begin in blistering fashion

Andrew Strauss

Andrew Strauss top-edges Peter Siddle for six but was caught at square-leg for 15 off the same bowler three balls later

England did not let the loss of early wickets perturb them in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia at Centurion.

Joe Denly and Paul Collingwood were instrumental with a 55 run alliance in 8.4 overs, following the early loss of Andrew Strauss and Owais Shah.

Although Collingwood perished for 34 from 30 deliveries, including five fours and a six, England reached 86 for three after 15 overs after winning the toss with Denly on 34 and Eoin Morgan two

James Hopes took a superb catch off Peter Siddle, diving left at square-leg, to remove Strauss for 14 and Shah perished four balls later, unluckily strangled down leg off Mitchell Johnson, for nought.

Denly and Collingwood forged a breathtaking partnership but wicketkeeper Tim Paine’s leaping catch from Mitchell Johnson’s bouncer sent Collingwood on his way.

England were forced into three changes from the side that lost to New Zealand on Tuesday, with Stuart Broad suffering from a muscle tear in his left buttock while Matt Prior and Ryan Sidebottom were laid low with a virus.

Tim Bresnan and Graham Onions replaced Broad and Sidebottom. Steven Davies, who replaced Prior in England’s squad this morning, came in for Ravi Bopara and took over the gloves from Morgan.

Australia made no alterations to the side that narrowly beat Pakistan in their final group game.

Strauss began aggressively, riding his luck to top-edge Siddle for six, but he fell at end end of the second over with 15 in the board.

Shah’s departure a run later did not deter opener Denly and Collingwood, who took advantage of the fielding restrictions by finding the boundary regularly.

Collingwood took an immediate liking to Hopes, driving him for consecutive fours and, later in the bowler’s first over, a straight six.

Denly survived a scare when he misjudged a single to new bowler Johnson, whose throw at the non-striker’s end from five yards went to the rope.

Collingwood punished the new ICC cricketer of the year’s miss with fours from the next two deliveries to take the score to 68 after the first powerplay.

A second was taken immediately with Ricky Ponting forced to turn to his fifth bowler, Shane Watson, in the 11th over.

Denly and Morgan accumulated steadily, aware of the need to keep wickets in hand for the latter overs.
